How a smarter chip helped identify an unknown virus.

Joseph DeRisi, an assistant professor at the University of California at San Francisco, made news in March when his lab, along with researchers from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, demonstrated that a previously unknown coronavirus caused severe acute respiratory syndrome.
