The Profit Tenet
Hospital chain Tenet Healthcare was fined a record $54 million by the U.S. Department of Justice after allegations that the company’s doctors performed unnecessary operations to collect more revenue. Investigations by the Department of Health and Human Services and individuals continue, and will likely result in greater fines.
BioSymbolism In a nearly unanimous vote, the U.S. House of Representatives passed a bill known as Project BioShield to create incentives for industry to join the battle against bioterrorism. Proposed funding is $890 million for next year, with a total of $5.6 billion over ten years. The initiative now moves to the Senate, where it also has broad bipartisan support. It’s a limp effort, but by all accounts, better than nothing—which is what the country has now.
